Acoustic Conversation (AC) is a high-energy acoustic-electric band, that includes: Gary Medeiros, principal song-writer and lead vocals; Ed Means, co-song-writer and lead guitar; Dick Hoye, keyboards, trumpet, and vocals; Brian Lynch, drums and percussion; and Kevin Fincher, bass.
Gary and Ed are natives of California who met in 1978 at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). Ed had just parked his car on his way into Social Ecology Water Quality Lab at UCI but didn't have enough change to pay the parking the meter. Parking fines were pretty steep for students with little or no money. So, Ed asked Gary, who was standing in the parking lot with another student and fellow musician, if he had any spare change. So, Gary reached into his pocket and pulled out some change and a guitar pick. Well, this immediately led to a discussion about music, bands, and an invitation to get together to play. That chance encounter eventually led to Ed's audition and subsequent membeship in the Nasty Habits Band, a local North San Diego County band that Gary had been playing drums and singing lead vocals in since 1974.
Since that time, Gary and Ed have been band members in a number of local groups including formation of "Clockwork" in the early 80's, "New Shoes" in the mid-80's" and the "Inside Out Band" (ISO Band) in the late 80's. Drummer, David Kuhner joined the ISO Band in 1988 when Gary switched to lead vocalist and front man for ISO. Keboardist, Dick Hoye joined the ISO in 1987 while ISO was playing at the Barn in Tustin when Bob Dickie left the band; and bassist Kevin Fincher joined ISO in 1994 when bassist John Subbiondo chose to leave the ISO.
The late 1990's were an extremely dry period for live music. Live music venues were either closing or switching to DJ formats. In response to this and a number other factors in the music business, Ed and Gary decided to form Acoustic Conversation (AC) in 1999 to write, record, and perform original music. AC's 2001 Release of "Still life in Motion" was the group's first CD and includes the soulful, high energy vocals of Gary Medeiros, imaginative lead guitar work of Ed Means, funky-jazz, R&B bass guitar work of Kevin Fincher, and latin percussion from Albert Lucero, a very accomplished musician/songwriter.
CD contains 11 songs that were written by Gary, or Gary and Tim Dwyer (former Nasty Habits Band Member) or Gary and Ed, and includes:
1, My Little Lover: This song was recorded in a country rock feel and portrays the elusions of love.
2. Someday, Someday: This song was written about the confusion that most guys feel when trying to make sense of women. This song features Ed's incredible guitar work.
3. Run Away (Black Widow): With a samba feel, the song portrays the dangers of being swept up in the passions of the moment especially when a beautiful woman and tropical drinks are involved.
4. Rosy: Rosy is a straight ahead jazz/swing number about a very free-spirited woman whose free-love life sytle is both a blessing and a curse.
5. Love is: This song was written in early 2004 during a recording session for a friend of mine who provided the songs lyrical foundation concerning our relationships with the ones we love.
6. Down, Down: Down, Down was written by Gary Medeiros and Ed Means and Features Albert Lucero on percussion. The song is about the meaning of life and that it is not so easy to acquire.
7. Baby Can't Wait: There is nothing easy about the experiment of child rearing. This song explores the fact that no matter what you do as a parent, children turn out the way they want anyway.
8. On the Freeway: On the Freeway is a funky, rhythmic song is about the lost art of hitch hiking. The song features the master of incredible funk, Kevin Fincher on Bass.
9. Not Going to Worry: Not Going to Worry was written about all of us have known people who just can't be helped and who continue to make bad decisions that cause their lives to spin out of control.
10. The Beginning: The Beginning was written about that period of time when our country was being torn apart by the Vietnam War. Sound Familiar? Remember that the men and women who server in the military aren't the ones who start the wars.
11. Turn me Loose: This bluesy shuffle was written about the heart and soul of true musicians who are passionate about playing. It's also a lot of fun song to play.
On January 24, 2009, AC released its second CD, "On The Road We're On", which contains 10 new original songs that were painstakingly and obsessively labored over for nearly two years. This project also provided an opportunity to add Brian Lynch on drums and percussion and Dick Hoye from the ISO Band on keyboards and trumpet to the group. The most difficult challenge in all of this was finding any spare time for all of the AC Band members with extremely busy schedules to record their respective tracks and not end up turning our lives upside down in the process.
AC now plays regularly at Java Joes in Yorba Linda, Table 10 and the Back Alley in Fullerton, as well at a number of other venues throughout Orange, Riverside, and LA counties. This site's "Event's Calendar" provides dates and times for AC's upcoming performances. AC is often joined by other great local musician friends such as Randy Snider, Albert Lucero, Mark Hermann, Dave Stretch, Chuck McIntyre, and John Grube.
